Shaped from a two-century-old piece of zebrawood, Cheer was “sculpted with my hands and sanded with my heart,” as Joe Jbeily likes to put it. His daughter Véronique is an ardent cheerleader and occasional cheerleading instructor. This piece caught the eye of the Société des alcools du Québec (SAQ) head office, where it was on display for several months. With a glint in his eye, the artist jokes, “Cheer went on a bender at the SAQ, united with wax in a holy union and is now bringing little bronze babies into the world.”
